around. joining me now on the phone is dan niles. along with shaw woo. good to talk with you gentlemen. dan, what's your take on this dell story? >> i mean, i think it's something that's been talked about for awhile. you can go back to actually 2010 in june and michael was at a conference and somebody asked him do you ever think about taking your company private? and the answer was yes. there's been this talk for a long time. was one of the ten worst performing stocks in the s&p last year. it was one of the top ten cheapest though. if you're looking at it from that perspective, the timing seems to make sense. >> so let me ask you, shaw, what you think. how would shareholders work out in this deal? >> well, you know, i agree with dan that this rumor's been going around for awhile. but i think the biggest problem is that the size of dell. you look at the stock today. it's -- the market cap's now $21 billion. so in the takeout, it would have to be a premium to that. possibly $30 billion. that's a lot of capital to raise. a lot of debt financing. so we think because of the size of this dea

. they join us now. dan, let me go to you first because we have been hitting on this theme that maybe we are setting up for a little bit of a drawdown of these gains, these spectacular gains we have had since the first of the year, do you think a drawdown is coming and might you hold your cash until then? >> yeah, i mean, certainly a drawdown is coming. you know, the question is to what extent? you know, momentum in the markets as we push to new highs on the s&p 500, again, hitting that 1475, moment you mean started to wane a little bit. i think the bulls are getting tired. so you know this could set up for a bout of profit taking. underneath the surface, we're also seeing rotation, so a lot of the names and a lot of the sectors that worked in 2012, they may be susceptible or vulnerable to a bit more profit taking so you want to be careful there. liz: could i ask you dan, which sectors? i mean financials obviously did very well in 2012, would they be ones that are just a little bit susceptible to this? >> well, you know, look, it would be across the board in my opinion. but the most vuln

with dan gross. his latest piece is titled "obama brinksmanship puts gop in tough spot on debt ceiling." so dan, you write that while you fall off a cliff, you only bump your head in to a ceiling but economically the ceiling has the capacity to deliver far more damage. you are talking like my friend steve kornacki here. what is failing to raise the debt ceiling? why is that going to be catastrophic? >> well, you know, first of all the stock and bond markets will really go haywire in a way they didn't when we were about to go over the fiscal cliff because government bonds are held by everybody. chinese central bank, japanese central bank, every single bank financial institution out there. so if there's any question over the value of those and they start to decline, these institutions have a great amount of leverage and interconnected with everything else and sort of see what happened in 2008. it's also this issue of, you know, who gets paid? if you start to have to say maybe soldiers get paid but not paying for the fuel or these doctors will get paid, you know, government is a huge force in

'malley. he's going to roll out sweeping gun control proposals of the connecticut governor dan malloy. how is this going to play into the 2016 race, do you think, chip? >> it will play into it. because right now the governors can actually do something with this campaign legislation. as they get in front of the senate and the most interesting one right now is secretary of state hillary clinton who doesn't have to make a comment, she can kind of speak through president clinton, and she can see how the story develops before she weighs in. >> 2016 is still a long way off. do you see what's happening now as kind of a sea change, that candidates won't be able to avoid the conversation and may in fact be out in front of the conversation to get out in front of it. >> i think the republicans will make it an issue because republican voters care deeply about their second amendment rites. i think the democrats will make it an issue because now there's a growing awareness that gun violence is something we have to take action about. i see both sides taking an interest in it. it's going to grow as an iss

february 16th of last year. joining us on the newsline, dan is here. you've got a price target of $900 a share. which is almost double from where we are now. doesn't that price target seem a little tone deaf to what's going on with the stock? dan? >> yeah. absolutely. price targets in my opinion are talking points for what you think the value of the stock is, what the opportunity for the stock is. so yeah, to use the point, $900 valuation, you know, clearly that's not the direction other analysts are going right now. not the direction this market wants to go right now. but that's the direction this company's earnings are pointing to. all the hype happening in the last few weeks on apple is centered around the supply chain. none of it is demand. every demand that we see for apple products is very strong. there are areas of weakness in europe, smartphone penetration in the u.s. the market overall in the u.s. is -- not all the points are positive, but generally it's good. >> if you're saying demand is good, but the orders of components for the product for which demand is strong are down,

a matter of minutes ago actually dan pfeiffer, one of the top aides to the t president put out a note that politico breaux this morning where they said that house republicans were considering, among other things, default or possibly a government shutdown. some of the dramatic steps that the republicans of the house are considering. pfeiffer referred to that specifically today saying just another reason -- just one more way that house republicans could make themselves even less popular than they already are right now. we have a pretty good sense of what we're going to hear the president say when it comes to the debt ceiling and fiscal issues. jay carney sort of telegraphed these statements during the briefings last week, the last one was on wednesday where he said, and i pulled up the notes to get it right. he said there are only two options to deal with the debt limit. congress can pay its bill or fail to act and put the nation into default. the line in the sand was clearly drawn during those news conferences with the press secretary jay carney last week. and the president is going to

themes and we just learned this from dan lothian who covers the white house. this is sort of the fact that the president is confronting the reality of a divided washington that he'll be acknowledging that there are some divisions but he'll talk about how there's responsibility to work on issues where there are common ground and, of course, this is considered certainly a speech that is somewhat hard to deliver not only because historically second inaugurals are not always very memorable but also because it's situated in a very weird place temp porely for president obama. we've just had the fiscal cliff battle. there's an upcoming one with the debt ceiling. ep has to acknowledge this not so pretty reality in the washington as he gives a speech that's supposed to be inspirational. >> the reality is the same congress he was working with on friday will be the same congress he's working with come tuesday despite the speech. we'll watch closely to see more details coming up. thank you so much. we'll watch more of this ahead. >> we always know security is tight in washington, but for the inau
